PAINTING EMBLEMS AND TACTICAL SYMBOL WITH THE USE OF STENCILS FROM K48071
SET ON THE P-40N (HASEGAWA) MODEL
We present the
method of using MONTEX masks on the P-40 model (1:32).
| The model
is covered with a camouflage. Put the stencils on the model when the
paint is completely dry.
This usually requires about 48 hours, but depends on the type of paint used. |
|
| We stick the white
background of the division emblem stencil. The foil’s glue is strong
enough to position the stencil several times. It should be remembered,
however, not to stretch or move the foil on the model to avoid damaging
it. It is better to remove it and reposition it again. |
|
| The graph shows the
right position of the aerograph. The paint should be sprayed perpendicularly
to the painted surface. The thickness of the paint should be carefully
chosen to allow for immediate drying after reaching the surface. A thick
paint may form the so called thresholds, and a thin one can seep under
the stencil. |
|
| The white background
is ready. It should be remembered to cover the surface of the model
around the stencil, so as not to spoil the model with sprayed paint.
|
|
The foil and the stencil
removed. The background of the emblem.
|
|
| The finished emblem.
White background has been covered with a stencil and painted with red
paint. |
|
| The painting of the
identification emblems should be started with the brightest colours.
(White - in this example) |
|
| Similarly to the division
emblem, we cover the area around the stencil. |
|
| In case of large emblems,
such as concentric signs, we may use additional stripes to help us stick
the whole stencil on the model at one go. |
|
| After painting the
white background we stick the part of the stencil which is to remain
white.
|
|
| Spraying the blue paint.
|
|
| The final effect. |
|
| Each of our sets contains
masks for painting the glazing of the cabin. |
|
| Our masks also allow
for protecting the inner part of the glazing. |
|
The first step in painting
the jaw is positioning of the mask for white colour, which creates the
shape of the whole image at the same time. |
|
| A few layers of the
paint should be sufficient to cover the surface of the jaw with white
colour. Intervals between spraying the following layers are necessary
to allow for drying. |
|
After complete drying
of the white paint, a stencil masking white teeth should be put in place.
|
|
| Applying grey paint filling the jaw. | |
| Positioning the mask on grey layer. | |
| Filling the inside of the jaw with red. | |
| Protecting the whole jaw before painting a black fringe. | |
| The complete jaw with the fringe after removing the stencils. | |
The final effect: the
model on a stand. The application of masks and precision in spraying
requires a lot of experience and practice, but the final effect – great
resemblance of the model to the original – is worth sacrificing a few
hours. |
|
After painting the model with basic camouflage paints
(olive drab and neutral grey) I moved on to painting the emblem: a head
of a predator bird, which - thanks to its vivid colours and large size
- makes the model look very attractive. |
|
Step 1 First, I adhered the stencil of the emblem’s main part (the foil has a glue good enough to try to put in on the model several times in case we don't manage to do it immediately). Next, I adhered the outer sketch, careful to make the slit between the stencils of equal width at all points. A practical remark: if the foil becomes wrinkled after it is adhered to the model do not try to stretch it. Instead you may unglue it and adhere again. |
|
Step 2 After adjusting those two elements, I unglued the emblem’s main part (it Gould be used in next steps) leaving only the outer sketch on the model. Because I use acrylic paints and a yellow Pactra is rather transparent I used a white undercoat. This refers to the emblem and the number behind the cockpit as well as the numbers on the rudder. All surfaces around the emblems and numbers should be protected from the paint from the aerograph before the painting begins. |
|
Step 3 After painting the white undercoat I painted the first emblem colour and serial numer. While painting the numbers the effect was visible immediately. |
|
Step 4 After the yellow paint dries it’s time for red. A suitable stencil’s element was adhered where the emblem was supposed to stay yellow. Next I laid on the red paint. It is important to adjust those elements inside the main stencil to avoid other mask elements not fitting inside. |
|
Step 5 In this step the area to remain red is covered. For that we use a suitable element of the stencil. Now we can lay on white paint, which is used to fill the bird’s eye. Adter the white paint dries I adhere a suitable mask, which masks the white eye. |
|
Step 6 After masking the white eye we put the black paint to mark the colours’ borders. After the painting and masking I was pretty nervous about the final effect. |
|
And this is what I saw after ungluing
all the masks and stencils… |
